Allegra has been gardening since she could walk, but in 2018 at the age of 7, she decided to turn her love for growing fresh, organically managed produce into a small scale CSA. Her family always had an oversized garden as a means to not only feed themselves, but share the yield with extended family, and preserve food for the winter. So she found herself with a great deal of produce to share. A quick post on a local Facebook group, and she had her first group of members.
What began as a small summer project for Allegra and her brother, Elliot, turned into something much more. While after the first year her brother became devoted to other aspects of property care, Allegra had found her passion, and began planning for a bigger and better season the following year. She began making executive decisions as to what crops would continue the following season, and which ones she would cull. High yield became a priority especially for heirloom varieties. She wanted to offer even more delicious produce at a fair price for her community members whom she lovingly refers to as her “garden family.”
Allegra, now 13, did a full redesign of her garden for 2020 adding 750 square feet of growing space. She looks to her efforts not only as something to take daily pride in, but as something to grow and develop. She is working on developing new growing spaces on the property, expanding her knowledge about composting, branding her business, using new packaging to better preserve her produce, creating new homemade natural fertilizers, and designing a new chicken coop for better egg management. Currently, Allegra’s produce is available through her CSA, at local markets, and upon special request if available.
Located on her family’s 16 acre property in North Salem, NY, Allegra’s Garden offers a stunning variety of natural and heirloom vegetables at a fair value. All produce is meticulously harvested with the utmost precision and care and nothing makes it past the garden gate without Allegra’s “ok.”
